Are we still on this? Preliminary "facts" are out, not speculations. This is everyone's fear come true situation, accept it and move on. The only findings that we are waiting on is "why did the caption switched off the fuel" - was it a murder-suicide or was it something else. I'm sure it doesn't take a whole lot of brain-power to say it is very very likely going to be the former.

I’ve not heard any suggestion of “pilot error” in non India controlled media. There has been reporting on the known facts which indicates intentional acts in the cockpit though. As suggested, the final report should be waited for and evidence based investigation completed.

The fact that AI still flies the 787 is telling. If there is an issue with the aircraft that can result in such a catastrophe, AI and all other operators would ground their fleet. If the concern was real, pilot and crew would demand the model type be grounded.

It's a little sad that such a major incident is being used by media houses to garner attention. The new economy of attention is ruining us, let the report come out. Why speculate to the nature of the disaster, what aviation needs is lessons, so that another such incident doesn't happen. But everyone wants attention so much, that they'd actually risk the investigation, rush it or even ruin it.

this case is so different that no matter what, no one can hide it or try to submerge the case. the fuel switches are manual and cannot be turned off automatically, and people should just accept that this happened because of a human. My honest feeling is the senior pilot felt emasculated by being pilot watching to such a young officer. He probably wanted to mess with the flight so that it would go on his record. But he didn't anticipate that it would crash. I don't think it was suicidal thoughts. It's just good old fashioned stupidity. I know it's a hot take but it fits all the facts we have right now. I know it's early to have occams razor in terms of his thought process but I think it's beyond a shadow of a doubt that a human switched off the engines.

A complete and thorough investigation takes time, generally a year (see IX1344, running to over 200 pages) or more. 

The initial investigation is only a quick status report on initial findings, with deeper work done over the coming year to ascertain the true cause and usually with a bunch of changes proposed (to the aircraft, airlines etc).

For e.g., I believe the names of which pilot said what is deliberately hidden to ensure that 1) public, and most importantly our 'media', doesn't go into some witch hunt, 2) public perception does not influence witness statements, and 3) the report needs to be sure about what is mentioned (AAIB is not known for quick shoddy reports).

I think all they are saying is wait for the full report, which is not wrong. And all signs do point toward deliberate pilot action. Hopefully the final report has some clarity on the WHY aspect also and proposes changes to promote a culture of opening up about mental health issues in the airline industry.

Note: A similar sequence of concerns were raised with IX1344, i.e., where is the report, AAIB is blaming the pilot instead of the bad runway design, N number of former pilots chipping in etc. but ultimately landing halfway down the runway and ignoring your co-pilots concerns was the root cause. The thorough investigation, based on past training reports, did reveal that the PIC had repeatedly demonstrated issues in landing on the touchdown zone, but this was not rectified by the airline. This history check helps provide a complete picture on WHAT and possibly WHY something happened.

This really paints a bad image of tranparency in India. The investigating committee is controlling the narrative so much as to not harm the reputation of anyone.

In this endeavor to protect airlines, pilots, and manufacturer, it is quiet expected that the controlled truth is revealed. It is nothing new and there is hardly any transaparency by Indian govt. 

Not that the Indian govt is not trying to do some good work but it always fails when it comes to wealthy individuals. So many people died and it is a no brainer that the complete truth be revealed to the people instead of damage control statement.

That is why people eventually leave India for better life. If given a chance, many would emigrate at an instant.

I don't know man but AAIB &amp; DGCA itself should take some accountability in projecting optics. what are the cost of these diversions? Honesty is the need of the hour. Numerous pilots are on r/aviation and avherald (quite reputable social hub for pilots) who basically feel pretty confident that this mechanical operation was deliberate. There is no automatic mechanism to flip such switches.
